Having recently returned from the Parabere Forum, held in Malmö, Sweden, Janine Kennedy wrote for the Chronicle Herald about food and food security titled A Fresh Approach to an Age-old Problem, (read the full article here).
“Something I’ve been learning about (at Common Roots) is how important cultural access to food security is. We work with newcomers to Canada, many of whom were farmers in their first country. By giving them direct access to garden plots we are giving them a source of income, cultural food security and they still have the ability to do what they know and love” says CRUF’s Sara Burgess.
Though Common Roots is currently in the process of finding new land in the city to permanently move the farm, they have big plans for the future. The farm has grown in both size and popularity since its creation in 2012 and will have a major role in sustainable food growth in Halifax over the coming years.
