BiHi Position: Community Outreach Coordinator

Organization: Common Roots Urban Farm – BiHi

Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia

Hours: 30 hours a week, early May until mid November

Wage: This position is paid for through the JCP program and payment will be made through them.  Payment is the maximum EI weekly rate, which for 30 hours a week works out to just over $22/hour.. Please note, however, that those hired will not be eligible for EI once the placement is completed.

Position Summary:

Common Roots Urban Farm BiHi park is one of two Common Roots locations in the HRM. BiHi Park is a hybrid community garden and market garden that focuses on education, community engagement, skills development and growing vegetables and flowers for sale and donation. 

We’re looking for someone passionate about local food and community engagement to help expand our on-farm programming and production. Responsibilities will include reaching out to community organizations, schools, and groups, assisting with volunteer coordination, and supporting day-to-day operations.

Individuals who identify as Indigenous, African Nova Scotian, Black and/or racialized are encouraged to apply and self identify. 

Duties and responsibilities:

  1. Gardening and farm maintenance:
  • Work with the Farm Coordinator to plant, cultivate and harvest in the market garden.
  • Work with the Farm Coordinator to care for common gardens and common farm areas.
  • Support the harvest and sale or donation of vegetables and cut flowers, including attending the farm’s weekly market. 
  • Work alongside the Farm Coordinator to support community events and build days for farm expansion.
  1. Coordinate and Host Activities:
  • Work with school groups to schedule educational opportunities and farm visits.
  • Reach out to local organizations and schedule group visits to the farm.
  • Host group visits on the farm

      3. Communications:

  • Contribute content to farm social media. 
  • Contribute to blog and newsletter as needed.

Skills/Qualifications: Applicants should be comfortable with outdoor physical work (including bending, kneeling and lifting heavy objects) in all kinds of weather, and be interested in gardening, mental health, and working with people. Basic computer and email skills are an asset.

The ideal candidate for this job will:

  • Be passionate about local food and food skills
  • Have strong organizational skills, including demonstrated excel/google sheets    proficiency
  • Be very comfortable reaching out to people via phone and email
  • Demonstrated group leadership skills
  • Have experience working with and coordinating diverse groups of people
  • Work well both independently and in a very social setting
  • Full drivers license in an asset but is not required
  • Access to vehicle is an asset but is not required
