Want a Plot?
At Common Roots Urban Farm, community garden plots will be available to interested organizations, groups, and individuals. We have 175 community garden plots, and an average 30% turn-over rate.
We currently have a large waiting list for new plots. We plan to build a few more plots in 2017 to squeeze in as many gardeners as possible.
If you are interested in gardening at Common Roots Urban Farm, please add your name to the Wait List, and join our email list.
Garden plots are available to community organizations, groups, and individuals for a fee of $40 per year. A plot is a 4’ x 12’ rectangle of soil that should be about 14” deep.
Gardeners (called “plotters”) need to prepare their own beds. Basic tools are available for your use during the daytime on weekdays. Plotters need to supply their own seeds and seedlings. Some seedlings and fertilizers are available for sale at our on-farm market stand.
Plotters are required to attend an orientation session. These occur often in the spring, and contain essential information about how to use the community farm.
The schedule for orientations will be posted in From the Field, our email newsletter, which you must subscribe to, to stay informed about all farm news, requests, events, etc. Please read the From the Field weekly, even quickly, being sure to read the Plotters section. Sometimes Hospital Security has a message for us, sometimes other important information is there.
Plotters need to commit to tending their plots at least once a week. Your plot should be productive and reasonably tidy. The biggest crime is to let your weeds go to seed – that’s just spreading problems around. The other major crime is to not harvest food, to just let it rot. If you’re going to garden with us, you need to promise to do your best to tend and harvest.
If you don’t harvest ripe veggies, etc., nor respond to our email within 3 days, we reserve the right to allow the food to be harvested for the Free Food Pantry.
You are also responsible for the path around the plot. Please help remove weeds and mulch with woodchips, help make the paths little journeys of magic.
We offer a Pay-It Forward option with payment, meaning you can donate to help others garden with us. We hope to offer 25 plots at half price for people living on Income Assistance. Please help us do this by donating an amount to the Pay-It-Forward plot fund.
Plot payments are best accepted at at the beginning of the season at an orientation by cheque to Partners For Care, or cash. Otherwise, payments can always be accepted via our website commonrootsurbanfarm.ca/community-garden, and whenever our on-farm market stand is open.
If you wish to build a frame around your plot, please inform the Plot Coordinator or staff before building. Pressure-treated lumber and glass are prohibited on the farm.
